About Me

Contractors Keep Us Sheltered

Look up at the ceiling over your head, and also think about the roof above it. You are lucky to have that shelter. Of course, you worked hard to afford it, but that point aside — someone else worked really hard to build it. Our point here is that without construction workers and contractors, we would not have homes in which to live. We all value our homes, and of course, we value the other buildings we spend time in, too. Everyone has a different way of showing their appreciation for this work. Our way is to write about construction on this blog. Your way could be reading about construction on this same blog!

When Do You Need Emergency Boiler Repair?

by Glenda Perkins

Boilers are rarely problematic because they don't have moving parts. But faults do occur, and sometimes they are very serious issues requiring emergency attention. A boiler is a complicated appliance that can be a serious safety hazard because of its immense pressure levels. It is important to recognize when a fault is an emergency or is a routine repair issue. Emergency boiler repair prevents the risk of injury to your family members and serious property damage from a boiler explosion.

So, what are the signs of boiler fault that require emergency attention? Read on to learn more.

1. Gas Leaks

Natural gas is odorless and colorless, but gas companies must add a smell additive called Mercaptan. You will feel a smell like rotten eggs when there is a natural gas leak. This leak presents a very serious threat since any spark in the house can cause an explosion.

A carbon monoxide leak is equally dangerous. This gas is also odorless. It is also heavier than normal air, making it sink instead of rising upwards and out of the house. A carbon monoxide leak can be fatal because it causes carbon monoxide poisoning. The signs of carbon monoxide poisoning include nausea, dizziness, headaches, unconsciousness, and sometimes death.

Installing a carbon monoxide sensor is the best prevention against a carbon monoxide leak. It will give you ample warning to call an emergency boiler repair technician. When you sense a natural gas leak, evacuate all people, call the emergency repair services.

2. No Heat

A boiler breakdown in cold weather is a serious risk, especially when there are children, elderly, or recovering patients in the house. Several faults can cause total boiler failure. Power failure is the most obvious. More complicated faults include a faulty thermostat and low boiler pressure.

Sometimes there is hot water from the boiler but no heat from the central air conditioning. Some causes of this phenomenon include airlocks, faulty diaphragms, and valves. In addition, low boiler pressure leads to a lack of circulation in the central heating. In turn, low pressure could be because there is a water leak. An emergency boiler repair technician can diagnose these problems and fix them quickly.

3. Water Leaks

Water leaks happen when there are worn-out pump seals or pressure valves. A boiler leak is an emergency repair issue because it leads to knock-on damage effects. It is prudent to shut off the water before calling the emergency boiler repair service.
